US President Donald Trump’s flip-flopping inconsistency on Russia will keep the world guessing on whether he still regards Europe as any kind of ally, and if so what kind it will be.
Just a few weeks ago he was refusing to criticise the Kremlin and indeed President Vladimir Putin, whilst blaming Ukraine for the war and calling Volodymyr Zelensky a ‘dictator.’
Now, he is growing increasingly impatient with both countries for not having yet agreed to a peace deal, as Germany now says the negotiations have hit a ‘deadlock.’
Arriving in Kyiv for an unannounced visit, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said this week that "due to the deadlock" between the US and Russia on a ceasefire deal, European allies' continued support for Ukraine in the war is "absolutely crucial.”
Yet, while on a visit to Moscow, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was quoted as saying "certain results have been achieved" in Washington's attempt to stop the Kremlin's full-scale invasion.
But as peace is discussed at arms length - via a series of middlemen and without Russia and Ukraine’s respective leaders ever actually meeting - it is important to witness what is happening in Europe.
